Australia have placed a temporary ban on the Sky Lanterns party products. Should the UK now do the same ? While they stand as an amazing sight in the night time sky, it's seems surprising in this environmentally concerned age that the sky lantern is legally sold within the UK. The paper lanterns use flammable liquid or a candle to produce hot air which inflates them and then sends them up into the sky. With the calls to ban bio-degradable balloon releases still hitting the headlines, it's amazing the chinese sky lanterns with it's land littering metal component and potentially dangerous flame have been overlooked by the wonderful display they give off. After contacting trading standard about my concerns, their communictaions amount to a "unable to comment". While a popular part of many celebrations they remain a threat to a potential fire. The other side of the argument is that they may be seen as no more harmful then a firework and infact they are used so infrequently that the small usage is not bothering about. Also if calls for a ban mount, than increase in publicity may cause an increase in usage and illegal imports. We are asking for your opinions.
